Facilitating More Human-Centered Governance Through Executive Advisory
“I think we’ve been kind of dancing around some of these things for a while. Today it felt like we actually started saying the quiet parts out loud.”
The Challenge
When COVID-19 pushed leadership and governance into remote and hybrid environments, board members across 60 organizations faced a new level of complexity. Communication became more difficult, conflict surfaced more easily, and stress and uncertainty affected how leaders collaborated and made high-stakes decisions.
The challenge wasn't simply learning how to operate virtually. Boards needed stronger tools for navigating trust, power, equity, conflict, and decision-making in an environment where traditional leadership practices were being tested.
How We Helped
humanature partnered with NeighborWorks America to strengthen the human side of board leadership and governance. Drawing on the sciences of human development, learning, and performance, we helped board members recognize where breakdowns in trust, communication, and power could occur and equipped them with practical ways to respond.
We did this through
Developing a shared lens for recognizing patterns of dehumanization, conflict, and disconnection
Providing real-time practices for navigating difficult interpersonal dynamics and restoring trust
Introducing human-centered approaches to forecasting, scenario planning, and high-stakes decision-making
Supporting boards in integrating equitable and fair principles into governance
Translating these concepts into practical tools that leaders could apply within their existing governance structures
Rather than treating these challenges as isolated interpersonal issues, the work connected individual leadership practices to the broader systems and structures shaping how boards govern.
The Outcome
Board members developed a shared language and practical toolkit for leading, governing, and collaborating through complexity. They strengthened their ability to navigate conflict and make decisions with greater clarity, transparency, and care.
Most importantly, the work created practices that could live beyond individual advisory conversations. By integrating human-centered decision-making, trust-building, and equity considerations into governance structures and policies, boards gained a more sustainable approach to navigating future moments of uncertainty.
The result was a shift in how leaders understood governance itself: not simply as a mechanism for oversight and compliance, but as a living system that can support both organizational performance and human well-being.
