Rehumanizing Governance in a Remote, High-Stakes Environment

Organization Type: Cohort of regional & national multi-sector boards

My microscope went from X10 to X100 resolution. As a leader, I’m looking at things with a different lens.

The Challenge

When COVID-19 pushed more than 60 governing boards into remote and hybrid operations, conflict increased, communication fractured, and decision-making slowed under pressure. While technology allowed meetings to continue, boards lacked a shared, human-centered system for navigating stress, power dynamics, equity concerns, and trust in high-stakes virtual environments. Governance structures designed for in-person engagement were no longer sufficient.

Our Role

humanature deployed leadforward, a scalable system of frameworks and tools grounded in the science of human development and performance. The system equipped boards with:

  • A shared lens to identify dehumanization and breakdowns in trust, power, and communication

  • Real-time practices to interrupt conflict and restore psychological safety

  • Human-centered decision-making models integrating forecasting, fairness, and transparency

  • DEIB-aligned governance tools embedded directly into board structures and policies

Rather than relying on one-time training, the system enabled repeatable, organization-wide behavior change across diverse boards.

The Outcome

Boards developed a common operating language for leadership and governance, improving alignment, reducing friction, and strengthening trust during high-pressure decisions. Leaders made clearer, more informed choices and began to view governance as a living system that not only supports compliance, but human well-being and performance as well. The result was more resilient boards, better decisions, and deeper connection to the communities they serve.
